“The last thing we need at Christmas is for our kids to find a dead deer on our lawn.”
What neighbors are describing as a “deranged deer” has been running amok through a Lake Ronkonkoma neighborhood, damaging cars, fences and even homes — all while repeatedly evading authorities.
The erratic white-tailed deer has been charging into vehicles and structures along a stretch just north of Portion Road, according to one resident who declined to be named but provided photos of the deer and his damaged pickup truck.
“It keeps running into cars and my fence and the neighbor’s brick house,” he said.
Suffolk police arrived this evening and are currently monitoring the deer.
But a chaotic scene unfolded Sunday around noon, when personnel from the state Department of Environmental Conservation attempted — unsuccessfully — to capture the animal.
“They were just telling everyone to stand back and that they thought [the deer] was messed up,” the neighbor said. “It was kind of pathetic watching them try to catch the deer’s neck with the loop. He just kept getting away.”
The DEC truck eventually left the area empty handed, but the deer reappeared today.
“They couldn’t get it, moved down the road, and I went on with my day,” the neighbor said. “I just got back from a run [Monday afternoon], and now it’s laying next to my neighbor’s house.”
His wife said the timing has only added to the concern, with Christmas days away and children nearby.
“The last thing we need right now is for our kids to find a dead deer on our lawn,” she said.
Though, the husband said, the deer slamming into a kid would probably be worse.
“I’ve lived here for 22 years and have never seen a deer,” he said. “There’s something wrong with this whole scenario.”
