Discount grocer Lidl announces Best Market takeover to start in early 2020

A global discount supermarket chain is coming to Long Island in 2020.

On Tuesday, Lidl, a German-based retailer, announced it will open its first stores in Nassau and Suffolk counties in Plainview, Babylon, Huntington, and Center Moriches early next year.

“We are happy to soon bring Lidl’s unique and fresh approach to grocery shopping to Long Island,” said Johannes Fieber, CEO of Lidl US. “Our new stores will allow customers to save time and money each week with a simple and efficient shopping experience.”

Last year, the international grocer announced it will be taking over Best Market’s 27 stores in New York and New Jersey.

Lidl plans to remodel the Best Markets in West Babylon along Sunrise Highway and in Huntington on Jericho Turnpike while opening new locations in Center Moriches and Plainview.

The Center Moriches Lidl will open in the former Waldbaum’s space at 812 Main St., while the Plainview spot is set to fill an old ShopRite in the Morton Village Shopping Center.

The company hasn’t released its plans for the rest of the Best Market takeovers across Long Island.

Lidl, which currently operates 10,500 locations in 29 countries, will be offering Best Market employees opportunities to join the company.

“We also look forward to celebrating our grand openings with many familiar faces from the local Best Market teams,” said Fieber.
