Suffolk County’s top male athlete for 2017 resides right here in West Islip.
Champion diver Patrick Carter, an outgoing senior at West Islip High School, is this year’s recipient of the 2017 Butch Dellecave Award.
Carter was presented with the award, which recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and the community, last week at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.
He is the first West Islip athlete to win.
“When you reflect back on the outstanding student-athletes West Islip has had over the years, you begin to realize what an incredible recognition this honor holds,” said West Islip’s athletic director, Tim Horan. “West Islip is proud of Patrick and wishes him continued success as he moves on to the Naval Academy [this fall].
“I’d also like to give special recognition to his coaches, Bob Kollar and Karyn Storan, and to his teachers who have had a profound positive impact on his development.”
Carter earned his second consecutive diving state title this year.
In his high school career, Carter was a six-year varsity swim team member.
He is a three-time All State, a five-time All Long Island, a five-time All County, and a five-time State Meet Qualifier.
Carter has been undefeated in dual meet competitions since the start of 8th grade.
He is a five-time state scholar-athlete with a 96.7 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars.
For the Butch Dellecave Award, athletic directors from all 66 Suffolk County school districts are asked to nominate one male and one female from their high school senior class. Nominees must be students who are not only at the top of their sports, but also score high in classroom performance and in their commitment to local community service.
The award is named for legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, and comes through a 17-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday.
