A garbage truck driver died on Thursday, police said, when the vehicle overturned on the Sunrise Highway Service Road in East Islip.
Cops said Xavier Angulo Espinoza, 45, of Central Islip, was behind the wheel and traveling east near the Southern State Parkway when he lost control of the truck, causing it to overturn at 11:48 a.m.
Espinoza was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Images captured by LI Fire Buff on Facebook show the truck on its side and engulfed in flames.
The truck was impounded for a safety check. Police asked anyone with information to contact the Suffolk County Police Third Squad at 631.854.8352.
