An East Meadow man was arrested after police found a large quantity of fireworks in his vehicle during a traffic stop, Nassau County Police said Tuesday.
Mario Calderon, 56, was charged with possession of explosives without a license, storage of explosives, aggravated unlicensed operation and multiple moving violations.
Police said Calderon was driving a 2005 Cadillac Escalade with an obstructed license plate when he was stopped at 5:29 p.m. Friday near Front Street and Gates Avenue in East Meadow.
Officers with the Bureau of Special Operations conducted the traffic stop and found the fireworks, police said.
Calderon was arrested without incident, and arson/bomb detectives responded to secure the explosives.
Police reminded the public that buying, selling and using fireworks in Nassau County without a license is illegal, and can result in property damage, injury, or death. Illegal fireworks also harm veterans with PTSD, as well as pets.
