An East Northport man died after crashing his SUV into a metal road sign on a Deer Park median Sunday night, police said.

Jose Hernandez-Escobar, 52, driving alone in a 2009 Honda Pilot found resting against the sign on Deer Park Avenue just north of Weston Avenue around 9:20 p.m., Suffolk Police said in a news release.

A passing motorist spotted the vehicle on the center median and called 911 at 9:22 p.m.

Suffolk Police First Precinct patrol officers arrived and removed Hernandez-Escobar from the SUV. Police said they believe he may have suffered a medical event before the crash.

Hernandez-Escobar was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead. Police impounded the Honda for a safety check.
