East Patchogue’s John Schiavo has signed a contract with the Missouri Mavericks of the East Coast Hockey League, it was announced Wednesday.
Schiavo, who last month lit up the internet with his dazzling moves at New York Islanders mini camp, is 21 years old.
This will be his first crack at professional hockey.
“Having the Mavericks coaching staff on site at the New York Islanders mini camp this summer was a huge benefit to this club, and seeing Schiavo in action first-hand really opened our eyes” said Richard Matvichuk, the Mavericks’ head coach and director of hockey operations.
Matvichuk had a long NHL career that included playing for the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils.
The signing actually comes less than a month after the team’s announcement of an affiliation agreement with the New York Islanders through 2017, joining the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League as the Islanders’ primary minor league affiliates.
The affiliation means integration into the Islanders scouting system, conditioning programs and training camps.
“I am really excited to start my first professional season with the Missouri Mavericks,” Schiavo said. “The opportunity to play for a coach like Richard Matvichuk, who had a very successful NHL career, is an honor.”
