Mom narrowly saves toddler in Farmingdale hit-and-run

A toddler and his mother escaped serious injury Wednesday after a hit-and-run truck struck them on a Farmingdale street, Nassau County police said.

The 2-year-old boy ran onto Conklin Street, police said. His 28-year-old mother ran after him and tried to pull him out of the path of an eastbound 1998 Peterbilt truck, Nassau Police said. But the truck struck them and kept going.

However, the mother had managed to grab the child and pull him out of the truck’s immediate path before they were hit. Police did not provide the details on how the pair were struck or grazed, but said both escaped suffering life-threatening injuries.

The toddler suffered a leg abrasion, and his mother had hip and legs injuries, cops said. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Nassau Police said cops tracked down the driver, 27-year-old Elvin Majano Diaz of Central Islip, and arrested him for leaving the scene of an incident with injury.

He was issued an appearance ticket for Aug. 21 at Nassau First District Court in Hempstead. His truck was impounded for a brake and safety check.
