A 59-year-old Farmingdale man faces a drunk driving charge after a head-on crash in Melville that critically injured another driver Friday night.
Police said that about 10 p.m. a man driving a 2014 Toyota Tacoma southbound tried to turn left onto Express Drive South at a green light when the SUV was struck head-on by a 2025 Mazda CX-7 traveling north, which also had a green light.
The driver of the Toyota, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Plainview Hospital and later transferred to North Shore Community Hospital in Manhasset, where he remains in critical condition, authorities said.
The Mazda driver, John Ankelman, 59, of Farmingdale, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He is being held overnight at Suffolk Police’s Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were impounded.
Police are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact detectives at 631.854.8252.
