Boater killed, another injured after boat capsizes at Fire Island Inlet

A Lindenhurst man died and another was injured after their boat capsized in rough water at the mouth of the Fire Island Inlet, Suffolk County police said on Sunday.

Police said Christopher Sicignano, 68, was operating the vessel as it entered the inlet when it overturned, throwing him and his passenger, 70-year-old David Johnson, into the water. Neither man was wearing a life jacket, and the boat sank.

After a passing boater alerted authorities by UHF radio, the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau and the U.S. Coast Guard responded and rescued the pulled the men from the water.

Johnson was taken by the Coast Guard to Coast Guard Station Babylon and then taken by the West Islip Rescue Squad to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Sicignano was brought to the Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin by a good Samaritan and then taken by the West Islip Fire Department Rescue Squad to Good Samaritan University Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
