Support is pouring in for a Sachem East graduate and former high school baseball player who is facing a devastating medical emergency.
In less than a week, nearly 750 donations have been made to a GoFundMe campaign created on behalf of 29-year-old Nicholas Russo of Farmingville, raising more than $78,000 as of Wednesday morning. Russo suffered a severe head injury that required emergency brain surgery and remains hospitalized in the ICU in a coma.
“Nick is one of the best people you could ever meet … the rock of our family,” wrote Ava Damiano, who established the fundraiser. “He means the world to his family and friends, and we can’t imagine our lives without his light.”
Damiano told Greater Long Island that Russo struck his head in a freak accident while playing softball two weeks ago.
“He still hasn’t woken up yet. We have faith he will!” she said.
The fundraiser aims to help Russo’s family manage medical costs and other expenses as they focus on his healing.

Russo, a 2014 alum of Sachem East High School who is married and started dating his wife during high school, is described as a kindhearted and dependable person deeply loved by those who know him.
