Free shuttle rides between Port Jeff and SBU returns

|

The Port Jeff Shuttle is back transporting Stony Brook University students, employees, families and guests for free rides to downtown Port Jefferson.

Today marked the third semester running the program, which is administered by Village of Port Jefferson’s Parking and Mobility Department. See the full schedule below.

“A lot of students don’t know that Port Jeff exists or that it’s on the water,” said Kevin Wood, the program’s manager. “So it allows them to come by, grab a bite to eat and experience the village.”

Last year, more than 6,000 patrons boarded the bus that holds up to 20 passengers at a time and is handicap accessible.

After hearing feedback from riders, Wood told GreaterPortJeff there will be some changes this year. For instance, students were asking for more late-night runs, as well as adding a stop outside the Hilton Garden Inn on campus. “We’re are always working to improve,” he said.

The later service hours will run until midnight, with the last pick up from Port Jefferson Village at 11:30 p.m., and the elimination of the Chemistry Loop stop. The shuttle will also run for 12 weeks, rather than 10 for the spring semester.

Fully funded by the Village of Port Jeff and the Port Jefferson Business Improvement District, it was developed in collaboration with the SBU Community Relations Office.

“By using the Port Jeff Shuttle, students and the community can enjoy free, easy access to the sights and sounds of Port Jefferson Village while reducing their carbon footprint at the same time,” said Joan Dickinson, director of Stony Brook University Community Relations.

With parking often being an issue during busy hours, Wood added that this will get more people to visit but alleviate the stress of finding a spot. “The shuttle will be saving parking spaces with each and every rider,” he said.

Students can also download an app that tracks the bus route in real-time, along with its schedule.

The shuttle will run until Sunday, May 17 and is available Thursday-Sunday during scheduled weeks.
