Fresh Food Supermarket owner José Colon is doing his part to be a good neighbor — to his customers through veteran and senior citizen discounts, to his community by hiring young people from Oakdale and other nearby hamlets and to local merchants by stocking their products on his shelves.
“We were approached by a few local vendors, and we’ve been supportive,” Colon said. “We try to support local merchants as much as possible.”
On an evening shopping trip this week, GreaterSayville.com found plenty of items from Long Island vendors stocked in the aisles of Oakdale’s newest grocery store. Here’s a sampling of what we found.
Precise Gluten Free: Sayville
Right up there between boxes of Bisquick and Hershey’s hot chocolate mix, we spotted Precise Gluten Free Foods’ pancake mix. Precise is owned and operated by Sayville’s Mayra Robayo, 37, who developed the line of guilt- and gluten-free mixes after her youngest child was diagnosed with life-threatening food allergies four years ago.
Subtle Tea: Centereach
A variety of flavors of Long Island’s craft brewed Subtle Tea are prominently featured in one of Fresh Food‘s cold sections. Based in Centereach, Subtle Tea was founded in 2013 by brewmaster Kyle Chandler.
Montauk Brewing Company: Montauk
New York’s easternmost brewery (and we’re pretty sure it will stay that way) began in 2012 as a basement brewing operation among longtime friends. Montauk Brewing Company 12-packs hold a prominent place in the beer section at Fresh Food.
La Flor: Hauppauge
Check out this impressive display of spice! Hauppauge-based La Flor certainly holds fort in the spices section. You name it, they got it.
Castella: Brentwood and Hauppauge
A wide spices selection from Long Island-based Castella is also available at Fresh Food. Castella’s corporate headquarters are in Brentwood; its manufacturing facility is in Hauppauge.
Nathan’s: Jericho
This jar of grainy deliciousness had us licking our chops for Nathan’s hot dogs and warm summer days, bouncing back between the pool and the barbecue. Nathan’s is headquartered in Jericho.
