Everything about the recently opened Brook House Deli in Brookhaven is new except for its name.
There’s the hand-crafted counter tops, the ornately decorated light fixtures, and a full menu of gourmet sandwiches and dishes.
But that name might ring familiar to Brookhaven Hamlet natives.
The deli located at 2478 Montauk Highway pays tribute to the former Brook House Restaurant — a landmark eatery once popular among locals, says Brook House Deli’s co-owner Teresa Gomes, who lives in the hamlet.
Once found at 405 South Country Road, right alongside Beaver Dam Creek, Brook House Restaurant was the spot for a great meal in the early to mid 1900s.
“It was elegant and very special. I don’t think we realized at the time how very special it was,” Bob Duckworth of East Patchogue writes in an historical entry on brookhavensouthaven.org.
The new Brook House also uses the same logo of a fisherman that once hung outside the Brook House Restaurant. Gomes, who opened the deli with her family, wanted to bring the neighborly feel back to Brookhaven.
And like the old Brook House, they’re using tasty food to do it.
(They serve breakfast all day, by the way.)
“We are really trying to give the community what they want,” said Gomes. “[Most] of our sandwiches are named after nearby streets.”
The Gomes family opened last month, and says business is going well.
“[Opening week] was really busy” said Teresa’s sister-in-law and co-owner, Colette Gomes, “Everyone has been watching it be built, so it was a really cool first week.”
The deli will have a grand opening party on Labor Day weekend to showcase new features like a soon-to-be-opened salad bar, delivery, catering, and daily hot soups.
There is also a suggestion box inside for any patrons with ideas.
“We want to accommodate all wants and needs,” said Teresa Gomes.
“We are also looking into healthier options.”
