House of the Week: Live life in the classic style in Patchogue

|

HOW_North Ocean_1

Tell your daughter’s date to wait in the parlor.

Invite all the big wigs in the village for a Jeffersonian Dinner that will be the talk of the winter.

Don your smoking jacket and unwind in front of a roaring fire.

Heck, do it all in the same night.

The possibilities for living in the classic style are endless in this stately Patchogue home on historic North Ocean Avenue.

Its listing agent, Joyce Roe of Douglas Elliman, would know — she lived there for 15 years, having sold the house to its current owner in 1995.

“We had more dinner parties in that house. I would hire a piano player,” she said. “My husband was involved in the Rotary and the Chamber. I think everybody who lived in Patchogue was at my house at some point when I was there. It was just that kind of house.”

The three-story home has maid quarters on the third floor and a finished basemen. So there’s four floors of living space. It has 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. There’s a modern kitchen with cherry cabinets and granite countertops.

In the back, summer visitors will find a large deck from which they can sip morning coffee or tomato juice before stepping down into a green expanse of lawn for a short stroll.

Above all, Roe said, the circa 1890 house is finely built. It’s no money pit like some century-old houses.

“It’s a good-bones house,” she said. “It was built by people who owned a lumber yard. Sometimes with old homes they’re all settled and the floors are drooping, the walls are cracked.

“This on the other hand is a tough structure and when you go in you can appreciate the quality.”
