GreaterLI named as one of the ‘Best News Websites’ in the region

|

The Press Club of Long Island has once again recognized greaterlongisland.com as among the Top 3 best news resources for Long Islanders.

Greater Long Island Media Group’s family of community news websites, all accessible through greaterlongisland.com, recently won 3rd place for Best Website from among fellow journalists for 2019.

1st place went to Newsday and 2nd place to News 12 Digital.

Greater Long Island had previously been recognized as a 2nd Place winner for its greaterpatchogue.com site, behind News 12 Digital but ahead of Newsday. That was for 2017.

The Best Website award was among several Greater Long Island Media Group gathered this journalism award season, from both the Press Club of Long Island, as well as the New York Press Association in Albany.

“We’re always happy when our work is recognized right up there with Long Island’s oldest and largest news organizations,” said Greater Long Island founder Michael White. “Newsday and News 12 are multi-million dollar operations. We’re still just a few people running around every day.

“One day we’ll have our own multi-million dollar newsroom.”

Among the other top awards was a Second Place win for editorial director Nicholas Esposito through the Press Association in the contest’s most competitive category: Feature Story.

Esposito was recognized for his writing and storytelling skills through a report about a forensic scientist who opened an art studio in Port Jefferson.

“The article’s strong lede ropes the reader in and breaks down her unique career switch with originality, detail and clarity,” the judges wrote.

The Greater-branded sites are on track to be viewed 6 million times in 2020 alone, during which time Long Islanders came to truly rely on us for localized COVID-19 updates, as well as other news stories.

The company also helped raise nearly $40,000 during the height of the pandemic to help local restaurants and hospital workers.

A seventh brand, GreaterSmithtown, is expected to launch this fall.

“The Greater Long Island team is a scrappy group of talented folks, and we’re so proud to be part of the company’s growth,” said Carl Corry, co-executive editor of GreaterMoriches. “We look forward to continue providing our communities with top-notch and uplifting journalism in this uncertain and ever-changing climate.
