Long Island’s first Hammer & Stain is pulling up anchor in Bayport and moving a couple miles west to new digs in downtown Sayville.
The group do-it-yourself woodworking studio opened in a cottage at 605 Montauk Highway last December — just in time for Christmas. Now, it will open in Sayville — just in time for Sayville Summerfest next weekend, said Hammer & Stain Long Island owner Sandra Bernius.
“We are beyond excited. Sayville is an amazing town,” Bernius said, announcing the move on social media late Thursday. “If it goes as we plan, it will be a quick, kind of seamless operation. We’ll have workshops here (in Bayport) one day and in Sayville the next day.”
Hammer & Stain, which is already a member of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, will occupy the storefront at 15 Main St. that was left vacant by the June closure of Little Wonders Puppy Emporium.
Bernius was inspired two years ago to open Hammer & Stain after she purchased a second-hand dresser, and refinished and personalized it for her daughter Sadie, who was 3 at the time. She said Friday that the Bayport location served the studio well, but the business had quickly outgrown the space.
The Sayville space is much bigger, she said, allowing her to showcase and stock many more decorations and materials for her growing business.
