Community rallies as family prepares for final goodbye to Hauppauge dad

Brian Yost of Hauppauge remains in coma after wreck, family approaches heartbreaking decision.

The family of a Hauppauge father critically injured in a Bohemia crash two weeks ago continues to receive an outpouring of community support as he remains in a coma and loved ones face heartbreaking decisions.

Brian Yost, 41, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after his car slammed into a tractor-trailer on Veterans Memorial Highway on Jan. 8. He remains in a coma, and a family friend said it is now a “matter of time” as the family prepares to make end-of-life decisions.

In response, friends, neighbors and local businesses have stepped up to support Yost’s family, who relied heavily on him. An ongoing GoFundMe campaign has raised thousands of dollars to help care for his disabled mother and his 18-year-old son, both of whom Yost supported.

Additional fundraising efforts were announced this week involving The Barn, an increasingly popular Long Island coffee shop with multiple locations. The business is donating $1 from every latte sold this week to Yost’s family. Owner Irena Angeliades has pledged to match the total amount raised, doubling the final donation to benefit the family.

The combined fundraising efforts are intended to help ease the growing financial burden as Yost remains hospitalized and his family prepares for the days ahead.

Meanwhile, Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives continue to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 631.854.8552.
