Chain-reaction crash in Hauppauge leaves scooter rider seriously injured

|

A Brentwood woman riding a scooter was seriously injured Monday afternoon in a chain-reaction crash that sent several others to the hospital in Hauppauge, Suffolk police said.

Mariana Oropeza Seijas, 23, was traveling north on Washington Avenue on a scooter when she attempted to turn left onto Motor Parkway about 3:42 p.m. and struck a 2010 Chevrolet heading east on Motor Parkway, according to Fourth Squad detectives.

The Chevrolet, driven by German Castro Penuelas, 25, of Brentwood than crashed into a 2009 Jeep that was stopped in the left turning lane. The collision pushed the Jeep backward into a 2003 Mazda also waiting in the lane, police said.

Seijas was thrown from her scooter and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Penuelas and a 17-year-old passenger in the Chevrolet, along with both adult occupants of the Mazda were also taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

All four vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said.

Detectives ask anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631.854.8452.
