Hicksville mainstay Peppercorns Restaurant to close after nearly 41 years

Hicksville’s Peppercorns Restaurant will close — and its iconic neon sign will be lit no more — come Aug. 1.

So reads an announcement ownership posted Saturday on social media.

“Peppercorns has become a home away from home for so many of you,” the post reads. “We know what it means to so many of you as well …”

“Words cannot express how grateful we are to have the best customers in the world!”

The owners, James Madden and Sean Costello, who took over Peppercorns in 2017 and only grew its loyal following from there, said the building’s landlord at 25 East Marie St. presented an “opportunity” that forced their hands.

They felt the deal was best for their families.

Built in what was the community’s firehouse, commissioned in 1893, Eddie Restivo opened the clubby steakhouse in December of 1983.

“What began as an idea for something new in Hicksville, Eddie and now [Madden and Costello] have grown Peppercorns into a place that has welcomed thousands of guests and employed a few hundred people over a span of 40 years,” the owners wrote.

According to the Peppercorns website, the building was moved from its foundation and pulled by horses to its current location in 1932.

The restaurant’s last day in business will be July 31.

“July will be business as usual though,” the owners also wrote on social media. “So come on down! We are hoping to see everyone for one last time at the place where ‘Everybody knows your name!'”

“We are all sad but happy for you gentlemen,” wrote one Instagram commenter in response. “The future is all yours. So many great times there with you and the staff. Thanks for the great memories!!!! See u soon!!!!!❤️”

The owners gave no public indication of what’s planned next for the prominent location. Scroll down for the complete post on Instagram.
