Historic Tam O’Shanter Country Club auction set for Tuesday in Glen Head

|

Most auctions are filled with antiques, artwork and collectibles.

An auction Tuesday in Glen Head will feature something a little different: a Toro Multi Pro 5200 turf sprayer, a Jacobsen greens roller and other specialized equipment that once helped keep one of Long Island’s historic country clubs in pristine condition.

That country club is Tam O’Shanter, where nearly everything inside and outside the shuttered clubhouse will be sold to the highest bidder.

According to the auctioneer, the building is slated for demolition, so everything must go.

More than 200 cherrywood lockers that once lined the locker rooms will be up for grabs, along with golf memorabilia, restaurant and fitness equipment, leather club chairs, artwork, chandeliers and even a vintage barber chair.

Some of the auction’s most unusual items never spent a day inside the clubhouse.

The golf course maintenance equipment isn’t just uncommon โ€” it’s valuable.

A Toro Multi Pro 5200 turf sprayer can cost more than $20,000, while Jacobsen greens rollers can sell for several thousand dollars. They’re the kinds of machines most people never expect to park in their garage.

Other items headed to the auction block include golf carts, utility vehicles, maintenance tools, conference tables, televisions and office furniture.

Tam O’Shanter opened in 1962 and quickly became one of Long Island’s premier private country clubs, hosting golfers, weddings, banquets and other special events. The club closed in 2021 after the property was sold.

The auction begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 74 Fruitledge Road in Glen Head. A public preview will be held from 10 a.m. to noon before bidding begins, and online bidding also will be available.
