Hofstra gets love from ESPN after team’s historic win over Elon

|

It’s been a helluva February for Speedy Claxton and his squad over at Hofstra.

The coach has his team on a five game win streak — the latest being a 97-64 thrashing over Elon on Tuesday.

And now the national media is starting to pay attention.

In Tuesday’s contest, Hofstra guard Omar Silverio was lights out from beyond the arc, sinking 11 of 13 three-pointers, a Colonial Athletic Association record. He finished the night with 40 points.

His performance was featured on ESPN’s “SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt” show. Watch it below.

He wasn’t the only Hofstra player to get some ESPN love.

Aaron Estrada, a transfer from Oregon and the team’s leading scorer, landed on the SportsCenter Top 10 plays list after hitting a three-quarter court shot as time expired in the first half. For the uninitiated, the Top 10 honor goes to the very best plays in all of sports each night. See Estrada’s shot below.

Hofstra now sits at 18-9 (10-4 CAA) and has its eyes set on earning a bid to the elusive March Madness tournament.

“[We] need to stay consistent,” head coach Claxton said following the big win at Elon. “I think we are in a very good place right now and we’re peaking at the right time going into March.”

The team’s next game is Saturday at 2 p.m. home against Northeastern (7-18, 1-13 CAA).
