Suffolk’s war on spa prostitution rolls into Holbrook

|

A Holbrook massage parlor is the latest Long Island spa to be raided by cops.

Suffolk Police arrested a Flushing woman for prostitution Wednesday at Blue Ocean Spa after an investigation that was sparked by community complaints, police said Thursday.

Yonglan Yan, 38, has been charged two counts of prostitution and one count of unauthorized practice of a profession, police said.

The raid took place about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Police noted that Yan was the only employee arrested at the spa, located at 1227 Grundy Ave.

The Holbrook bust is the latest in a steady drumbeat of massage parlor raids by Suffolk Police this year. Most were sparked by neighbor complaints and carried out in tandem with town fire marshals and code inspectors.

Raids across Suffolk

Suffolk authorities have conducted at least eight other spa raids since January.

Among them was an unnamed spa at 944 Montauk Highway in Shirley in January, New Foot Spa at 198 New York Ave. in Huntington in February, and Pure Co Natural Spa in Huntington Station in April, where the Human Trafficking Unit also joined the investigation.

Some locations keep coming back. Police raided 523 East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station three times in six months.

The first raid, in January, targeted a business called The Spot. In May, police returned to the address, which was by then operating as The Shop, and arrested Irene Jin, 53, of Bethpage, on charges of unauthorized practice of a profession and prostitution.

When police hit The Shop again in June, Jin was arrested again — that time for criminal nuisance.

Prosecutors have also stepped up efforts, in pursuing charges against those arrested.

In June, Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced the indictment of 10 people and four corporations accused of running a prostitution ring and illegal massage enterprise across Suffolk and Queens from February 2025 to June 2026.

Prosecutors said the ring took in more than $1 million. The indicted businesses include Long Island Green Apple Spa, Lavender Spa Salon and Hunting Spa in the Town of Huntington, along with 192 Foot Spa in Flushing. Search warrants turned up cash and gold bars.

A Newsday investigation found that nearly 400 women have been arrested at illicit Long Island spas. The media outlet’s “Sex Next Door” report stressed that Nassau and Suffolk police have not arrested a single man for buying sex in spas over the past five years.

At the Blue Ocean Spa, the Town of Islip Fire Marshal and an ordinance inspector issued several violations against the business, police said.

Yan received a desk appearance ticket and is due to be arraigned at a later date at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.
