Holiday art exhibit to light up Patchogue Dec. 10-12

|

New holiday artwork is going to light up Patchogue this weekend for the MoCA L.I.gts – Merry & Bright exhibit.

The light show will transform the Carnegie Library and the Congregational Church into an inviting open-air museum and arts destination for visitors to enjoy safely on foot, by car, and online — for free — starting Dec. 10 until Dec. 12, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The facades of the buildings are lit up by using cameras to cast the designs from artists.

This event is run by the Patchogue Arts Council in association with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and Village of Patchogue. These groups teamed together this fall when they originally launched this projection art project.

“It’s going to be kind of built before your eyes with lights with a really nice dramatic holiday festive score that was written just for this event,” said David Kennedy, executive director of the chamber.

While checking out the displays, people are welcome to browse around the local stores and restaurants for special deals and promotions.

Kennedy said the event is made possible by the Patchogue Arts Council and a grant the chamber receives from Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco every year to put on these cultural events.

In previous years, the grant was used for the annual Midnight on Main Street New Year’s Eve event, but this it’s canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Patchogue Arts Council came to Kennedy with the art exhibit idea and the chamber decided it was the perfect event to lead the village into the holiday season while benefiting local businesses at the same time.

“This is the perfect event because it’s not that you come at a certain time to see it, you come on your own time over the course of those three days,” Kennedy said. “It’s just something that is attractive that would bring you to come to Main Street.”

“We’re grateful to the Patchogue Arts Council, I wouldn’t have been able to come up with this without their tremendous assistance.”
