House of the Week: Castle-living in Brookhaven

Live out your Walt Disney dreams in this castle by the Great South Bay.

Aside from the 5,000-square-foot home being very much a castle, listing agent Lina Lopes with Douglas Elliman Real Estate said another interesting aspect of the property is its size: 9.75 acres.

“The exclusivity of the location is probably the most unique part of it,” Lopes said “It’s on just shy of 10 acres, bordering the bay and surrounded by a nature preserve.”

The 5-bedroom home was first listed in March for $1,995,000 but the price was just slashed to $1,450,00.

That’s about a 27% drop in price. The property taxes are just over $22,000 a year.

“It’s an aggressive drop, but this time of year with the market, we didn’t want to lose any more of the summer visitors and vacationers,” Lopes said. “We wanted to make enough of a drop that it would grab everyone’s attention.”

Lopes said it’s more likely a Manhattanite looking for a summer/weekend retreat will buy the home.

“In Brookhaven and Bellport and Bellport Village, there are a lot of summer and weekend homeowners, and a lot Europeans,” she said. “There are more and more coming from overseas, from Europe, from all different places. And Douglas Elliman does have a relationship with Knight Frank, so we do get a lot of international buyers that way.”

Her favorite parts of the home, located at 51 Hawkins Lane, are the front foyer and the dining room.

“You enter into the foyer and you feel like you’re coming into a true castle,” she said, noting the structure was built in 1990. “And then walking into the large, formal dining room, it was definitely built for a king.”
