Hummus Fit to celebrate grand opening at former Good Steer location this month

|

Hummus Fit has bulked up.

The Ronkonkoma-based healthy eats and prepared-meals chain, is preparing to open its largest location yet and also its first sit-down restaurant — at the former site of The Good Steer, which closed in July 2022 after over 60 years on Long Island.

The new location is nearly complete, with a grand opening celebration scheduled for Sept. 28, from noon to 5 p.m., at 2810 Middle Country Road.

“This was just one of those things where God gave us the opportunity we have been looking for,” said Tony Mavruk, who, with wife Liana, started the meal-prep business in 2015. “It was like, all right, you can’t miss this opportunity.”

While The Good Steer was known for its steaks, burgers, and barbecue, Hummus Fit’s first restaurant will allow diners to build their own bowls and salads with lean chicken, meat, and fish, alongside a “greatest hits” menu featuring its most popular meal-prep options. The iconic “Good Steer” sign will also hang in the dining area as a tribute to the former restaurant.

In addition to the approximately 60-seat restaurant — which Mavruk described as “somewhere between Chipotle and a Hummus Fit concept”— ready-to-eat meals will be sold next door at a former 7-Eleven, part of the same three-acre property acquired on Middle Country Road.

The Lake Grove location is part of Hummus Fit’s ambitious expansion, with the fast-casual chain now operating 23 locations across several states.

Hummus Fit originated from the couple’s first venture, Hummus Mediterranean Grill in Holbrook.

For Liana Mavruk, moving into the former Good Steer location is a homecoming of sorts. “For my wife and her family, [The Good Steer] was their Christmas tradition,” Tony Mavruk said.
