Humpback Whale washes up, dies on South Shore beach

|

A humpback whale washed up on Lido Beach today and died shortly later, according to reports.

Stretching 35 feet long and weighing several tons, the male whale was discovered just before sunrise along the shoreline, just south of Woodhail Street.

Some onlookers were driven to tears as they watched a giant crane prepare to haul the dead whale away from the shoreline in anticipation of high tide around 2:30 p.m.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin told Newsday that the whale did not appear to have wounds from a ship strike or an entanglement.

The Atlantic Marine Conversation Society responded to the scene and is expected to necropsy the humpback later today, Newsday and News12 reported.
