IGHL has opened a new Smile Farms location at the site of its administrative offices in Manorville.
IGHL, a 40-year-old nonprofit that supports people with intellectual disabilities and their families, said it plans to employ 30 people at the campus, adding to the roughly 75 people it employs at three other campuses.
The first Smile Farms at IGHL was started in Moriches and mainly grows plants and herbs.
The new Smile Farms, which is the signature philanthropic partner of 1-800-Flowers.com, was established in May and features a greenhouse and four raised beds, where employees grow produce for IGHL residences. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on July 10.
In addition to learning valuable vocational skills and a paycheck through our Smile Farms at IGHL programs, individuals benefit from many advantages through participation of this program including increased independence; an opportunity to contribute and achieve; development of skills, abilities and self-esteem; and an opportunity to be provided with dignity and self-respect, IGHL said.
