“When we walk, cancer runs.”
That’s the slogan of the nationwide Light The Night initiative, through which people from communities across the U.S. use lanterns and even fireworks to shed light in the dark for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Neighboring Bay Shore started locally with a Light The Night initiative, and Islip followed suit.
This past Light The Night program in Islip was in memory of Jeannette Feminella, an Islip native who served as principal of Commack Road Elementary School for over a decade — from 2005 to December 2016 — until she died from cancer.
“She was truly a longtime piece of Islip, and … we have a very nice check,” announced the Islip Chamber’s president, Doris Kennedy of Kennedy L.I. Realty Inc., at a special chamber meeting last week.
Exactly $1,703 is going to the Jeannette M. Feminella Memorial Scholarship from Light the Night.
Also at the meeting, about two dozen women were honored for their work as local business owners, business leaders and community leaders (photo below).
