Some of the best cheeses in the world are being made right here in Suffolk County.

Don’t take our word for it. Catapano Dairy Farm in Peconic has brought top awards home four times from the American Cheese Society’s annual competition in Madison, Wis.

And later this month, Catapano’s spreadable goat cheese and goat ricotta will be incorporated into a six-course menu at the Island to Table fundraiser for Homegrown Change.

The Island to Table outdoor dining experience in New Village will feature five local chefs cooking with only local products. Aside from raising money for local sustainability projects, the event seeks to raise awareness about Long Island’s local food sources, from land and water.

Catapano Dairy Farm opened in 2003 on the North Fork, starting with 18 goats; they’re now up to 100, all milkers.

“Right after that first award, restaurants from all around were placing orders,” said Catapano Dairy Farm manager Debbie Slack. “But you only get one pound of product per goat per, day” so the farm needed to expand.

Aside from the fresh spreadable goat cheese and goat ricotta being used for Island to Table, Catapano produces fresh sheep cheese, and hard and aged cheeses.

The selection includes Romano, feta and cheddar, as well as goat milk fudge and yogurt.

The dairy farm on North Road in Peconic is available for tours, which are pre-booked and cost $10 per person, with a minimum of 10 people.

“They get an hour-long tour of the farm, they get to milk a goat, as well as get their own, personal cheese tasting,” Slack said.
