Island Empanada in Shirley will open on Jan. 17

|

Let the countdown begin — Island Empanada’s big day in Shirley is less than a week away.

The new eatery opens Sunday, Jan. 17, and owners Camille and Terrence Short are ready to start slinging empanadas like there’s no tomorrow.

“We are so excited to finally open our store,” Terrence Short said. “We are looking forward to being a part of, serving and supporting such a wonderful community, including local community events and organizations, beach goers, and campers on the beautiful beaches of William Floyd State Park.”

Because, really, what’s better than grabbing some warm empanadas on your way to the beach?

Shirley’s Island Empanada — located in the Southport Shopping Center at 999-6 Montauk Highway and part of the fast-growing Puerto Rican restaurant chain spreading across Long Island — will serve more than 30 varieties of fresh empanadas, along with rice and beans, rice balls, tostones, sweet plantains and delicious Latin style chicken and rice soup. There’s also plenty of dessert options on the menu.

“While searching for locations to open our first store, we knew we wanted to find one in a close knit community,” Camille Short said. “When we discovered an available storefront in the Southport Shopping Center, we were thrilled and grateful to join this well known robust shopping center.”

The eatery has partnered with Grub Hub, Uber Eats and Door Dash as delivery options for customers. Online ordering will also be available.
