Safety, accessibility and environmental resilience.

Those were the goals when the Town of Islip set out to make sweeping upgrades to its West Islip Marina. And this week, town officials, both current and former, held a ribbon-cutting to mark the project’s completion.

“These improvements will help support local marina operations and provide better access to the water for residents,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Now more than ever, we are focused on enhancing boating safety throughout the town, and we’re grateful to take another step forward with this project.”

The marina, located on Great South Bay at the southern end of Beech Drive, now has a rebuilt boat ramp and new bulkhead on the west side. The electric and water services, also n the west side, were upgraded to better serve boaters as well.

That, and the marina’s north wall also underwent renovations. At the marina entrance, both sides of the breakwater were fully replaced, and dredging was completed to support safe navigation, town officials said.

Aside from the infrastructure improvements, the project also included enhancements on the east side of the marina.

“Native plants were added along the breakwater to support shoreline stability and environmental health, along with a new fencing installed along the beach,” the announcement further reads.

“Roadways and parking areas on the west side were repaved, creating a more accessible and welcoming experience for residents.”

Carptenter was joined at the marina by town councilmen Jorge Guadron and Michael McElwee, Linda Vavricka, the town clerk, Tom Owens, the town’s parks and rec commissioner, and former councilman Brian Ferrugiari, who had long championed the project.
