After 5 long years at the Babylon shelter, Jackie still hopes for a family

|

Her confinement has felt endless.

Jackie, a tan mixed-breed dog with soulful eyes and a love for toys and big kids, has waited five years now for a family to take her home from the Babylon Animal Shelter — and her kennel friends are desperate to see her story finally get its happy ending.

Jackie’s story is one of “hope, perseverance, and the unconditional love an animal can offer after enduring so much,” said Natascha Patil of the Babylon Animal Shelter. “(She) is a sweet and loving dog.”

It was under traumatic circumstances that Jackie arrived at the shelter. She was one of 10 neglected dogs found on a debris-filled property without access to fresh water.

Over the years, one by one, the other dogs found homes or foster placements. Yet Jackie remains the last one waiting.

July 20 marked a heartbreaking milestone: Jackie’s five-year “shelter-versary.”

The shelter’s Facebook page shared a bittersweet message to commemorate the sad milestone.

“The day has arrived 🥲 Today is the 5th sadanniversary for Jackie 💔 No one stood up, no one came to get her… Jackie’s been waiting for these special people who’ll take her home and will spoil her endlessly!!!” the post reads.

In spite of her long stay, Jackie’s spirit hasn’t been broken, Patil said. Staff and volunteers describe her as a true sweetheart who craves human attention, cuddles and kisses.

She adores older children (ages 12 and up) and needs to be the only pet in her future home, shelter representatives said.

The shelter is making a big push to get Jackie adopted or placed in a foster home. She even has her own Facebook page — Jackie Needs a Family — where volunteers post weekly updates and adorable photos of her playing with toys or chilling in her kennel.

Those who want to learn more about Jackie or meet her can contact the Babylon Animal Shelter by emailing [email protected] or calling 631.643.9270. The shelter is located at 80 New Highway in Amityville.
