There’s a movement on campus in Madison, Wisconsin.
And though the slogan may be said tongue-in-cheek, the “Jacky Heisman” T-shirts popping up across the University of Wisconsin pay tribute to the work Sayville’s Jack Coan has put in as the Badgers starting quarterback this fall.
The Sayville High School 2017 graduate in his first season as a starter has guided No. 8 Wisconsin to a 6-0 start, a run that has them deep in the hunt for a Big Ten championship and reaching the NCAA championship playoff.
On a national level, Coan, whose quarterback rating is 14th best in the nation, is not yet part of the Heisman Trophy conversation. But he has received high praise for guiding a Badgers offense that has hummed along quite efficiently through the first half of the season.
The junior has thrown for eight touchdowns and has just one interception. And his 76.3 percent pass completion percentage ranks second in the country. Not too shabby.
Wisconsin’s offensive linemen posed after the Badger’s 38-0 win over Michigan State Saturday wearing the “Jacky Heisman” T-shirts to honor Coan, who ranks second in the nation in pass completion percentage.
“He’s been playing great all year,” Wisconsin guard David Moorman told the Wisconsin State Journal. “We love him. Even if nationally he’s not recognized, we recognize him as our leader and a great player. We think he should be deserving of being in the race.”
Coan found the post-game actions of his in-game protectors amusing.
“I was already laughing with them,” he said in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “It’s pretty funny. Those guys are the best.”
On the very serious side, Wisconsin does indeed have a very legitimate Heisman Trophy. Running back Jonathan Taylor is the nation’s second-leading rusher.
“It’s funny how we have a guy that should win the Heisman on our team and they have shirts for me,” Coan told the State Journal.
