Java jolt: Starbucks project in Lake Ronkonkoma gets town approval

Sip and savor, Lake Ronkonkoma. A Starbucks is in the works for the vacant Chase Bank building in the Shoprite plaza on Portion Road.

Following a public hearing, the coffee chain received a stamp of approval Thursday from the Brookhaven Town Board to move forward on its plan to open a drive-through shop at 601 Portion Road. The board approved Starbucks application for a site plan and special permits.

In addition to its drive-through option, the coffee shop will also include an outdoor seating area with room for 16 customers, as well as seating for 39 inside the store.

Presently, the nearest Starbucks is two miles north, on Middle Country Road in Centereach. A Dunkin’ is located about a mile west, on Portion Road in Ronkonkoma.

A relatively new Jersey Mike’s is located next door to the vacant Chase building in the Lake Ronkonkoma shopping plaza.

The Starbucks chain now counts more than 38,000 locations across the globe.
