‘Joe Smith Jr. Day’ in Mastic on May 15 will honor local boxing champ

|

I’s time to celebrate our champ.

William Floyd High School graduate Joe Smith Jr. — boxing’s newly minted light heavyweight champion — will be honored with his own day on Saturday, May 15, at the Mastic Fire Department.

“Joe Smith Jr. Day” will give local fans a chance to mingle with the champ from Shirley and have their photo taken together. The event will run from 1-3 p.m. and feature live music.

Smith captured the vacant WBO light heavyweight championship in April with a majority decision over Maxim Vlasov. The Shirley man is a 2019 William Floyd Athletic Hall of Fame inductee.

His title bout was broadcast nationally by ESPN from the Osage Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Masks and social distancing will be required at the May 15 event, which was partly organized by Star Boxing, Inc. The Mastic Fire Department is located at 1080 Mastic Road in Mastic.
