Kitten rescued from Medford storm drain, now has forever home

A tiny kitten is safe and sound — and adopted — after being rescued from a storm drain in Medford by Suffolk County Police officers.

A resident on Jordan Drive heard the cries of the kitten and called 911 on July 6. Officers from the department’s Emergency Service Section responded just before 3 p.m. and were able to lift the grate and safely remove the distressed animal.

While the officers did the heavy lifting, a local resident stepped in to give the kitten a home.

“Thanks to everyone involved in going ‘above & beyond’ to save this poor, sweet baby,” wrote Cindy Ladeira in a comment on the Suffolk County Police Department’s Facebook post announcing the rescue. “While our officers opened the grate, a local resident opened their heart and took the little feline in.”

The police department said the kitten is now settling into its new life — and new home.

That kitten, too, was quickly adopted by a nearby resident.

It’s not uncommon for Suffolk’s Emergency Service officers to perform emergency rescues of trapped kittens from storm drains and sewers. The Terryville and Medford efforts are among many over the years.

In most cases, the kittens are ultimately taken in by good Samaritans, local families, or animal rescue groups.
