Lake Grove woman opens Woodbury Playa Bowls, three more planned for LI

|

Playa Bowls, the growing superfruit bowl chain, expanded its Long Island footprint on Saturday, opening a new location in Woodbury.

It’s “Pineappleland’s” fifth outpost on the Island. And three more are on the horizon.

The owner of the Woodbury shop, Alyson Halpin of Lake Grove, has signed on with Playa Bowls to open four Long Island shops. She said she’ll open locations in Stony Brook and Commack, as well as another Long Island location that hasn’t been determined, according to a Long Island Press report.

The Woodbury shop, located at 8285 Jericho Turnpike celebrated its grand opening by giving the first 50 customers a free bowl and a custom Playa Bowls T-shirt.

Leading up to the opening, the store also engaged fans with five days of Instagram giveaways. A DJ was on hand during the launch event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A family affair

Halpin opened the shop with her husband, setting a goal of teaching their children about entrepreneurship.

“We’re very excited to be opening our family business so our kids can learn about starting and running a business,” Halpin told the Long Island Press. “Our children are all going to work here and be a part of this. My daughter does social media for the store.”

Hundreds of locations

Playa Bowls has more than 275 locations nationwide. The chain offers bowls built on a variety of bases, including açaí, pitaya, coconut and oatmeal, topped with combinations of fresh fruit, granola, honey, nuts and seeds.

The Woodbury location — open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. — is the fourth in Nassau County, joining stores in Lawrence, Long Beach and Merrick. Suffolk County’s sole Playa Bowls is in Miller Place.
