A lockdown at William Floyd High School on Friday afternoon was found to be a false alarm, according to the William Floyd School District.
The incident began at 1:42 p.m. when a lockdown announcement was issued throughout the school. Law enforcement responded swiftly, school officials said, and swept the building.
By 2:07 p.m., the lockdown was lifted after police found no evidence of a threat.
The district believes the lockdown announcement may have been triggered by a malfunction in the system. School officials said the district is investigating the exact cause and will share their findings with the community once available.
Responding to comments on Facebook that the a fight between two individuals triggered the lockdown, the district commented, “The technology department is working on this right now with representatives from the company en route to find the cause of the malfunction.”
In October, officials added, the district proactively about a student who brought a gun to school.
Dismissal was delayed at the high school, and, as a result, busing for students in middle and elementary schools was also postponed.
Metal detectors were installed at the high school in December as part of a pilot program. The devices are being alternated between entrances until all units arrive, the district said.
