Locust Valley student-athlete revived with CPR, AED after medical emergency at practice

|

A Locust Valley High School boys basketball player suffered a serious medical episode during the team’s first practice of the season on Monday and had to be revived by coaches, sources tell Greater Long Island.

A source with direct knowledge said the student-athlete collapsed during the late-afternoon session, prompting an immediate emergency response from the coaching staff.

Coaches began CPR while another staff member retrieved the on-site AED — an automated external defibrillator — which was used to help resuscitate the player.

Their swift actions are being credited with saving the boy’s life.

Section VIII coordinator Pat Pizzarelli confirmed the incident to Greater Long Island on Tuesday.

In New York State, all coaches are required to maintain current CPR and AED certifications — training that proved critical on Monday.

Monday marked the official start of the winter sports season across Nassau County. It’s unclear what caused the medical episode, and the student’s condition was not immediately available.

Locust Valley administrators have not yet released a public statement. Players and families were notified Monday evening, sources said.

This is a developing story. Check back with Greater Long Island for updates.
