Manorville’s Goncalves earns third-team All-ACC football honors at Pitt

|

Eastport-South Manor High School graduate Matt Goncalves is a third-team All-ACC football honoree, the conference announced this week.

A starting left tackle with bowl-bound Pittsburgh, Goncalves has helped pave the way for the Panthers to win their last four games. This Sunday, Pittsburgh (8-4) will learn whether they will play in the Sun Bowl or participate in a different post-season bowl game.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Manorville resident played in all 12 games this season as a redshirt junior, helping lead a ground attack that saw Israel Abanikanda gain over 1,400 yards rushing. Goncalves, 21, started five games and appeared in each of Pittsburgh’s 14 contests in 2021, blocking for Heisman Trophy candidate and current Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Below are highlights of Pittsburgh’s 42-16 win over Miami last Saturday. They begin with Goncalves clearing the way for the Panthers’ first touchdown of the game, getting a chip block on a defensive lineman before drive-blocking a linebacker out of the way for Abanikanda to scamper into the end zone.

As a redshirt freshman in 2020, Goncalves was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). He graduated from Eastport-South Manor High School in 2019.
