Mineola community steps up for family of teen lost to brain cancer

|

Mineola neighbors, friends and classmates are rallying around the family of a 16-year-old Mineola High School student who died last week after what his family called a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Benigno Jose Garcia is described in his obituary as “a young man much loved by his family and friends,” whose presence “illuminated those around him” and who always showed “love, strength, and tenderness.”

The boy’s mom, Juana Barrientos, described him in a heartfelt note on a GoFundMe page established for the teen’s family as “a normal high schooler, full of life with a great spirit.”

The grieving mother described how hard it was to watch her son’s condition deteriorate.

“Seeing the energy, love and passion be drained away is a hard thing to witness,” she wrote. “Childhood dreams that will never be reached will live on forever through his loved ones.”

A family friend established the GoFundMe effort to help Benigno’s family cover funeral and related expenses.

In four days, the fundraiser has raised more than $14,000 from over 250 contributions.

According to his obituary, Benigno faced his illness with bravery and resilience.

“He was a true fighter, facing a hard battle against brain cancer with bravery and strength, showing great resolve until the end,” it reads.

He is being remembered as a source of light and laughter.

Visitation services for Benigno were held Saturday, Jan. 24, at Whitting Funeral Home in Glen Head. The boy will be laid to rest in his native Guatemala.
