Mount Sinai resident becomes next CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital

There is new leadership at the helm of Stony Brook University Hospital.

On Tuesday, the hospital announced the appointment of Carol Gomes as the institution’s next chief executive officer.

Gomes, who has served as SBUH’s chief operating officer over the last six years, recently took on additional responsibilities as interim CEO.

Some of Gomes’s career highlights with Stony Brook include the expansion of its operating rooms and radiology suite, as well as the ongoing integration of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital into the Stony Brook Medicine Hospital System, according to a spokesperson.

“In every position Carol has held at Stony Brook University Hospital, she has led with passion for transformative healthcare and championed delivering the highest quality of care to our patients,” said interim president Michael Bernstein.

The Mount Sinai resident, who has two master’s degrees from Stony Brook University in management/ policy and healthcare management/ administration, has won several leadership awards including Long Island Business News “Healthcare Heroes Award in Achievements in Healthcare.”

“This is an exciting time for Stony Brook Medicine as our upward trajectory continues into the future in terms of health system growth, reputation, quality outcomes and embracing a talented team of professionals delivering extraordinary and cutting-edge care,” said Gomes. “It is an honor and privilege to be part of this dynamic team.”
