Nassau County’s best places to live in 2023, ranked in report

|

Two Great Neck communities top the list of best places to live in Nassau County, according to a report released by Niche.

Great Neck Gardens and Great Neck Plaza, ranked Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, both received A+ overall grades from Niche. The pair also hold the two top spots in New York.

Great Neck Gardens — No. 10 on Niche’s list of Best Places to Live in America — scored particularly high in the categories of Public Schools, Health & Fitness, and Good for Families, pulling an A+ for each. It’s lowest grade was a B- for diversity.

Similarly, the “walker’s paradise” Great Neck Plaza brought home A+ grades for Public Schools, Health & Fitness, and Good for Families. But it received an A in diversity and the community’s lowest grade was a C+ for cost of living.

A bevy of famous people have either grown up in the Great Necks or called the area home. New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is from Great Neck, along with fashion designer Kenneth Cole and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. Groucho Marx lived there with his family in the 1920s, as did F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Actor George Segal and Olympic figure skating gold medalist Sarah Hughes grew up in Great Neck.

Fun Great Neck fact: Charlie Williams, the pitcher who the Mets traded to the San Fransisco Giants in 1972 for Willie Mays, graduated from Great Neck South High School in 1965. Williams’ 1992 Mets Topps baseball card is on sale at Amazon for $14.50.

Niche says it pulls data from such sources as the U.S. CensusFBI, Bureau of Labor Statistics and CDC, and combines it with millions of resident reviews to create its annual Best Places to Live rankings. The company says it considers affordability, the local housing market, neighborhood diversity, area public schools and walkability, among other factors.
