She’s up and running!

The “Long Island,” the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company’s first new ferryboat in 21 years, has officially begun passenger service.

On Friday, Dec. 27, at 1:15 p.m., the vessel made its inaugural trip, sailing from Port Jefferson Village to Bridgeport, Conn.

The 1,000-passenger ferry, which can carry up to 124 cars, was delivered to the company earlier this month, and successfully passed its final Coast Guard inspections late last week.

Prior to its maiden voyage, Greater Long Island became the first media outlet to tour the new ferry. [Tap here for a photo tour.]

Powered by twin 3,000-horsepower engines, the “Long Island” is expected to complete five round trips daily between Port Jefferson and Bridgeport, according to Fred Hall, vice president and general manager of the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company.

With the addition of the “Long Island,” the ferry company now operates a fleet of four ships: the “PT Barnum,” the “Grand Republic,” and the “Park City.” Of these, the “Park City” is the oldest, built in 1986.
