Support provided by Northwell’s Mather Hospital, which delivers the five-star difference in exceptional care and is ranked by Medicare in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance and patient experience.
Staying in a suite that feels more like a comfortable hotel rather than a typical hospital room. That was the idea behind the redesign of St. Charles Hospital‘s newly opened maternal/child unit on its second floor.
“There began to be more of a demand for private rooms from new moms,” said Dr. Jerry Ninia, OB-GYN. “They wanted to have their baby and spouses with them in the room and we decided to give the patients what they want.”
Although the wing was relatively new, since its original opening around 2000, Dr. Ninia said that the hospital decided to give it a facelift through fundraising and different events over the last two years.
“We received $500,000 from donors, different events and our gala throughout the year,” said Lisa Mulvey, executive director of the St. Charles Hospital Foundation. “I’m thrilled… I couldn’t imagine anything better for our patients.”
The upgraded floor features 16 spacious private rooms that have leading-edge equipment and amenities that will cater to postpartum mothers, newborns and their families. As part of the renovation, the hospital took its former semi-private rooms to make each room a safe-space for new mothers. These rooms have brand new beds and a private spa-inspired bathroom with walk-in showers.
“Physicians, nurses, and most importantly, new parents, have found the renovated rooms to be beautifully designed, roomy, warm and welcoming,” said Anne Shea-Lewis, director of maternal/child services at St. Charles. “The rooms are providing the ultimate bonding experience for the new family.”
One of the first moms to give birth in the new unit, Katherine Lewin, was thrilled with her stay.
“Everyone here is great,” she said while cradling her new baby boy, Jonathan. “My husband and I loved it here when I had my first and I wanted to be in a place where I knew I’d be taken care of…. It’s so nice to have privacy and to be able to bond with your baby.”
As part of the renovations, a breakfast buffet will be offered every morning for new parents and the night before discharge, the parents are given a three-course private dinner for two.
