New restaurant crawl combines food, drinks and history in Port Jeff

|

Local foodies and history enthusiasts will be traversing the sidewalks of Port Jeff while going back in time for a first-of-its-kind restaurant crawl.

The Port Jeff Historic Restaurant Scavenger Crawl — hosted by the Port Jeff Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Pro Port Jefferson Association and the Ten Cent Menu Club — happens Saturday, Jan. 26.

“I describe it as hot beverages with hot history,” said Barbara Ransome, the chamber’s director of operations.

The event, which runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., gets participants to taste hot beverages and snacks from 12 restaurants (listed below) while being asked historical questions about the location. Their answers will go down on a scorecard.

“If they answer all the questions right, they will be eligible for raffles worth $200 each,” said Ransome.

According to the chamber, the group wanted to run another crawl in the downtown after the success of its first-ever breakfast crawl last March.

Local restaurant owners like Francesca Nakagawa, who owns Slurp Ramen on West Broadway, are in support of the crawls, too.

“As a person, I love these types of event,” she said. “You go around, you get to meet people, and you get to see new stores you normally wouldn’t go to.”

She’s especially excited for the Restaurant Scavenger Crawl.

“I can’t wait,” said Nakagawa. “It is going to be so much fun.”
