North Babylon street renamed for community leader Vinny Sciacca

|

Vinny Sciacca has been well known in North Babylon for over 40 years.

As well known as they come, really.

Now, the war veteran and longtime community leader is being recognized for all of his efforts in his adopted hometown.

Earlier this month, Town of Babylon elected officials, civic leaders, friends and residents all gathered at August Road to celebrate the street’s name change to “Vinny Sciacca Way,” honoring the longtime president of the Sunset City Civic Association.

“I first met Vinny Sciacca right after I graduated from college,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “I learned a lot from him, and always try to incorporate it into how I carry myself as an elected official. The Town Board and I are thrilled to honor Vinny with this street renaming in our hometown of North Babylon.”

Sciacca, a retired NYPD detective, moved to North Babylon following his service in the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Medal Award.

But, 74-year-old Sciacca was no stranger to the neighborhood before moving there in 1965.

“My grandparents lived out here and we used to come out here every weekend and summer; that’s how the Italians do it,” he said.

He had been active in the North Babylon community ever since he made his home there. And his family left its mark as well; one of this daughters became the valedictorian of North Babylon High School.

In addition to serving as president at the civic association, he had also served as a North Babylon school board trustee and president, as well as aTown of Babylon beautification ambassador.

“I love living in North Babylon,” said Sciacca.

“I was in shock [after learning about the dedication]; it is such an honor.”
