The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for western Long Island up until 9 p.m. tonight with the threat of heavy rain, high winds, and small hail.
Parts of northern Nassau County were and still are under a severe thunderstorm warning, urging communities in its path to prepare for 60 mile per hour wind gusts, quarter size hail, and wind damage to trees and powerlines.
While there is no tornado threat, NWS meteorologist John Cristantello said the area should be on alert for possible strong wind gusts and inch-sized hail.
“We’ve seen reports of hail, but mostly smaller than what we consider to be severe limits,” Cristantello said. “But for wind gusts, we’ve seen well into the 60s so for the Island, that means there could be some gusts that are at least around 60 miles per hour, if not a little bit higher.”
To best prepare for the inclement weather, Cristantello said to stay tuned to the NWS website, weather radio, local news stations, and phone alerts.
