Game on!
Long Island High School girls flag football teams have been added to the New York Jets Girls Flag Football League, starting this spring, the team announced on Wednesday.
The expansion — announced on the 36th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day — is a collaborative effort between the Jets and Nike.
“There are a million more boys playing high school sports than girls,” said Jesse Linder, the Jets’ vice president for community relations. “We want to help even out those numbers.”
The Jets sponsored eight teams across New Jersey last year and are expanding to 42 teams across NJ and Long Island this year.
The 16 participating Long Island teams are:
SUFFOLK
- Center Moriches
- Amityville
- Longwood
- North Babylon
- Sachem North
- Sachem East
- Walt Whitman
- Ward Melville
NASSAU
- Freeport
- Hempstead
- Locust Valley
- Long Beach
- Lynbrook
- Massapequa
- West Hempstead
- Plainview-Old Bethpage
The games will be 7-on-7 and will be played at the home team’s high school with the championship to be played at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J. in June. The season kicks off this March.
During the announcement, the Jets selected Bella Silvestri of Long Beach High School for an all-expenses-paid (two plane tickets, hotel accommodations and two tickets) trip to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles on Feb. 13.
